Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre (Aircraft Restoration Group) https://www.facebook.com/Aircraft-Restoration-Group-1613873188864206/

The Aircraft Restoration Group is led by Mike Eastman and they hope to establish the Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre and build three hangars to house their aircraft collection. All enquiries and offers of help or support in cash or kind to Mike at the link below.

Both the Dove and Venom arrived on the 2 February 2016 and are on loan from the De Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney with the Primary glider being acquired from the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in 2015 and arriving at Fishburn in late February 2016. The ARG have several other aircraft which are currently in store elsewhere and will not be moved to Fishburn until the hangar(s) are erected to provide some protection from the weather. These include Flea G-ADRZ, the unique Thurston Tawney Owl G-APWU, Spitfire FSM BR954/JP-A and an as yet unidentified Oxford Mk1! The group website is currently under re-build but like most groups these days they also have a Facebook page at the link below.

Fishburn News 30th December - David Thompson

My last visit of the year and indeed the decade and the strip itself continues to be damp with landings at the pilots discretion and as they might say at nearby Sedgefield Racecourse, heavy under foot!  A welcome return home today for resident Rans G-XALZ which arrived from Fenland at 13:00 were it had been under rebuild following it’s heavy landing accident here on the 25 June 2018. I was quite surprised to see ‘LZ back at Fishburn as in the meantime it’s owner had bought a Tecnam P92 Echo which arrived from its former base at RAF Mona on the 29 August.

The 23rd saw the arrival of both the Irish registered Cherokee from Weston and the Cherokee Arrow as well as the departure of Aerobat G-PPFS, noted on the 14th, to Gamston with C152 G-BHCP acting as the ferrying aircraft.

Not seen by me but a nice way to end the year was a first flight for resident RV-4 G-RATC in the hands of its builder/owner Paul Johnson on the 31st December. His 3rd RV build!

A very happy New Year to one and all and here’s to an active 2020 for Fishburn Airfield and all GA airfields and strips throughout the UK. Hopefully?

Happy New Year!

Fishburn News 14th December - David Thompson

A last pre-Christmas visit found little activity on either the ground or in the air with the latter being restricted due to the state of the strip because of the recent poor weather, it was so cold and bleak that even the usually busy Aviator Café was near empty until mid-morning. Not quite the night before Christmas, no mice either just a huddle of GA pilots stirring their tea!

The Tawney Owl is a rare bird, pun intended – oh no it wasn’t, oh yes it was, and arrived from the Aircraft Restoration Group store near Masham on the 19 October together with their Flying Flea G-ADRZ which resides in Hangar 1 but which I have yet to see. The ‘Owl is presently in open-store but desperately needs to be under cover due to it’s mainly wooden construction and work continues apace on the new ARG workshop in the backfield at Fishburn. During these winter months and weather permitting, an ARG working party meets every Saturday to progress the workshop cum hangar and maintain their aircraft, mostly ensuring that they remain weather proof.

The group are always looking for new members as well as corporate help and sponsorship and if anyone feels that they can help with either or would like to come along and have a look at the collection, chairman Mike Eastman can be contacted on; (M) 07803 809883 or email; ARG@aircraftmail.com Already planned for next year is a Wings & Wheels weekend on the 1-2 August 2020 plus four open-cockpit days as well as a New Year addition to the collection!

Fishburn Report 23rd June 2019 - FoDTVA / FoDSA

A rather later than planned trip to Fishburn with the Friends groups from both Teesside and Doncaster, where we had a look around a couple of preserved aircraft followed by a walk around the hangar areas. Only one hangar was open but you couldn’t pick a better one as it houses the resident Spitfire/P-2 Kraguj and other vintage types. Unforseen circumstances meant we arrived later than planned, so the arranged dinner visit to the Aviator Cafe was unfortunaly changed to a coffee stop. As always the staff were very acommadating - thank you.

Fishburn Report 6th May 2019 - Chris Smith / David Thompson

Following the precedent set for Bagby two days earlier this time it was Susan Powell one of the other BBC weather presenters to tell us that this May Bank Holiday had been the coldest on record since 1987 and just what you want to hear ahead of a fly-in! The forecast had obviously had an effect on visitors both by air and road although The Aviator Bistro appeared to be the winner as inside tables were hard to come by but those outside were treated to close up views of both the Isaacs Fury and Jurca Spitfire as John Rogerson brought both aircraft up to the fence for plenty of selfie opportunities.

The Blue Yonder Airtours Cherokee Six made an early weather check flight and promptly cancelled all of its remaining bookings for the day although it did carry out a fast taxi run for one young visitors before putting the covers back on and calling it a day. The Rufforth based Pup was the first visitor and the night-stopping Cardinal was off and south back home to its strip near Stamford before the rest of the days visitors arrived as did the best of the weather in the early afternoon. Both of the rotary visitors were local as were the fixed wing ones except for the RV-4 G-RVER which came down from Prestwick and obviously likes to get out and about and was noted at Oban the following weekend.

The Aircraft Restoration Group had their three aircraft cockpits open as well as a marquee housing their large scale model Sopwith Camel and SE5a and their two latest recruits, Fred and George, stand guard inside The Aviator dressed in war-time and post-war period flying clothing and help to both publicise the group and hopefully attract funds via their collection tins? Hopefully! The group have just acquired a Romney Hangar from NELSAM at Usworth and hope to put it in the ‘back field’ and use it as a workshop one day to be able to display the rest of their collection which includes Flying Flea G-ADRZ, Tawney Owl G-APWU, EoN Primary WP266/BAPC423 which was fully restored here in 2017 as well as the mortal remains of two Airspeed Oxfords.

Fishburn Report 28th April 2019 - Chris Smith

A very rare Saturday off work led to me planning a visit to the Aviator Bistro at Fishburn Airfield as it has changed hands since I was last here and the reports coming out of the place are nothing short of excellent. When the day came, the weather was fairly awful, certainly not VFR and even IFR-qualified pilots would probably think twice, but with all the time in the world I figured I had nothing to lose by driving up anyway and if it was closed up and deserted then so be it. As it turned out, the place was busy and vibrant! The first big hangar was open and is presumably the engineering hangar and there were a handful parked out, with one departure noted and no arrivals, although the Vans looks to have quietly left during my visit also. Despite the good level of trade being experienced, the catering manager in me wondered how they could justify eight members of staff vs about 20 customers, that said at peak times the place must be far too small to cope with potential demand. Of the 20 customers mentioned, only two stood out as aviators which demonstrates the reputation that has been built up within the local community since the incumbent owners/operators took on the place, driven mostly by social media in a rare example of one of the good uses of Facebook and the likes. It is often said DTVAs equivalent café in the aero club building is too isolated to succeed but Fishburn is far more remote with less business surrounding it so there is no excuse, and I'm sure the current owners of the Goosepool House and Café will succeed, but I digress. Back to Fishburn and I had the Parmo listed on the specials board and it was faultless, even the chips were outstanding and chips are normally just chips no matter who's doing them! I have my birthday booked off work as I do every year and this year it just happens to coincide with the next Fishburn fly-in so I know where I'll be spending my day!!

All believed resident except G-ATIS, G-BNKE and G-RVDJ, the latter requiring confirmation. G-WILI was identified from its new colour scheme rather than the reg that wasn't visible and due to the afore mentioned weather I wasn't going for a walk-around to confirm it! G-CCDY, G-CDLS and XG743 all went in the book.

Carlson Sparrow G-BSUX

This aircraft went to a new owner at Croft after Don Harker passed away but has now returned to it’s spiritual home in the ownership of Joe Redfern who also has RV6 G-ODEE. For completeness the RV6 is currently based at Croft but will return to Fishy when the weather and the strip improves. As part of the deal to buy his hangar at Croft, Joe got the Sparrow for free. A sort of aeronautical BOGOF deal!

Fishburn News 5th January 2019 - David Thompson

My first visit of 2019 and what an impressive start in regards to visitors, and I don’t mean aircraft ones either. An early afternoon call on what was a bitterly cold day found a camera crew setting up around the pilots office and two VIP minibuses parked at the top of the access road – the cast of Geordie Shore was in town. If you are over 25 years of age you may well have to do an internet search to find out who they are and if you’d been in earshot of the cast you would have to do likewise for some of the language that they used! They were here for about three hours to film some flying sequences using the Blue Yonder Air Tours Cherokee Six which will probably result in 3 minutes of airtime but hopefully some publicity for both the airfield and Blue Yonder albeit on social media which seems to be their main publicity outlet of choice.

The Fury II K2048 is part of Simon Johnston’s Airfield Aviation fleet and like his two Kraguj’s was previously based at RAF Linton On Ouse but flew back to it’s spiritual home of Fishburn last autumn. I say spiritual home as it was built at Fishburn by John Rogerson and first flew from here in 2009 and in time will be joined by Simon’s other Fury II, G-FURI which is presently off-site. The Bellanca is another newish resident which I first noted here on the 19 December 2017 after it had arrived from the Birchwood House/North Duffield airstrip near Breighton and formerly owned by Condor Aviation but having new local owners since June 2018. The Dragon Chaser is another elusive resident and is now fully-rigged so perhaps an indication of some flying in the near future to add to it’s less than 50 hours to date. All of the following are known to be residents except for G-BHZU/BNKE/BOSM/DAVE and DRIO although the latter two have been here for some time under extensive rebuilds.

A new professionally produced Fishburn Airfield website has just gone live and can be found at; http://www.fishburnairfield.co.uk/. There is also a Facebook page, link here; https://www.facebook.com/fishburnair/ and the Aviator Bistro too which continues to offer meal deals for visiting pilots; https://www.facebook.com/theaviatorbistro/.
